Non-profits, Cultural Organizations | Exhibitions, Visual Identities

1014 Inc., a US-based nonprofit and cultural organization based in New York City founded by the German Federal Foreign Office and the Goethe-Institut invited Studio Aorta to submit a response to an RFP for exhibition design. The challenge was to design a non-invasive exhibition that accomplished three main objectives. First, to tell the story of the historic townhouse that is 1014’s namesake with the building as the primary object of the exhibition; second, to showcase the proposals submitted by architecture firms to a competition for the major renovation of the building; and third, to support the various activities organized by 1014 for Open House New York weekend and Archtober.

Approach

Studio Aorta developed a striking visual identity that used strong typography, bold color, atmospheric accent elements, and a multi-dimensional approach to the installation of exhibition graphics that highlighted and complemented the architecture of the historic site. The use of thoughtful illustrations and graphic elements based on architectural details coupled with bold, high-contrast color and shapes reinforced the spirit of the exhibition and provided a fresh environment for programming and events. One of the central elements of the exhibition was a large floor map graphic that welcomed visitors from the lobby and led them through to the primary event space, which allowed visitors to contextualize 1014 within its urban context. Staff observed that visitors interacted with and spent time with the map more than other parts of the exhibition.
